Basic difference between 4 stroke and 2 stroke motor

I get asked sometimes about the differences between the 2-stroke vrs 4 stroke motorcycle engines.  I could tell you about the sound, smell, differences in weight, but to simplify this, I'm going very basic.  Simply put, both engines have at least one piston.  The two stroke engine takes two stokes through the cylinder to complete a full revolution.  Intake=stroke one, Exhaust=Stroke # two.  With a four stroke engine, in takes a full down stroke and back up to complete an intake, then another two stokes (one down and one up again) to complete an exhaust cycle.  Thus four strokes.

There are way more details within the different variations of both motor types, but that's to be saved for another time!
